It's really quite remarkable that coming from that very dark place you've been in you were able to create this epic column that not only eloquently describes the elements of your feelings, but also precisely captures how these feelings are being felt exactly - if exactly means 90% or more - the same way by so, so many other people. I'm certainly one of them. I'd say it's your best work yet. I'm not going to offer any of the many trite cliches or platitudes to cheer you up, but you know what they are. Just pick one or two that will work for you. We've all got to find a way to keep on keepin' on.

Thank you, Bill, for sharing a feeling many of us are certainly dealing with. The time change in conjunction with the KR trial added to my outlook on the current state of affairs.

As a subscriber, I feel I’m easily getting my money’s worth from your efforts. Write what you want, when you want. That’s what I signed up to read. Be well.

As an educator who grew up close to Sandy Hook, what it would be like to confront a shooter is often in the back of my mind, especially after UMass recently had a scare with an armed person on campus. To see out “justice” system side with the shooter in that situation reduced me to a new level of hopelessness. So I really relate to the feelings you’re describing.

I tell my students they can change the word and they’re young enough to believe it. They have the attitude like “once this world is ours, things will be different.” I have to believe that’s true for their sake, that their generation won’t end up as beaten down and cynical as ours.

I do find it poignant that even when we feel like this, we can still provide some kind of solace to those around us.

I’ve been struggling with the same feelings in almost exactly the same time frame (although no stranger to burnout). Thanks for this awesome piece; it helped me connect causes and effects that I see in my own life.

Have you considered getting seeking professional help? The quality of your writing has really deteriorated over this last year.

Regarding Rittenhouse: I have faith in the jury system. 12 separate random independent people agreed to by both sides. They had all the evidence and facts as I am sure neither you nor I did. You did leave out all factual detail and information of what happened that night but the jury had it.

I once enjoyed your articles but they have turned into a rant based on platitudes rather than any factual information. This Kerouac stream of consciousness mimic is getting old.
