As someone who's doing alright now but grew up very poor in the boonies, and thus walked out of the laughing Brookline theater in tears in the first 5 minutes of Bowling for Columbine, I definitely get you on the monster trucks and all that entails. Enjoyed the essay more than podcasts. A comment about the Monster Jam. Happened to be driving by the DCU Center on Saturday (a mistake traffic-wise) and was intrigued by the sight of hundreds of young children who were bursting with excitement as they danced toward the entrances. Couldn't wait to get home to discover what the event was. Monster Trucks are not my jam but recognize the cultural importance to an awful lot of people. It is part of my spiritual growth to be less condescending and more appreciative of what brings others joy. Neo-nazis excluded.
